Various Types of Surgery for Diverticular Diseases

Diverticular disease is the medical term used to describe the small sacs or “diverticula” that form on the walls of the colon. The condition can be serious and even be life-threatening due to complications. That is why in some instances, removal of the affected part of the large intestines is necessary.

Diverticula are tiny, bulging pouches forming in the lining of the digestive system, usually in the lower part of the large intestines. They are common for people who are 40 years old and above and they seldom cause any problems. However, when these diverticula become inflamed or infected, it can cause abdominal pains, nausea, fever, and a change in bowel habits.

  • Hartmann’s Procedure. This is one type of colectomy that will remove a portion of the affected colon and clean out any possibly infected areas. Patients who need Hartmann’s procedure will be placed under general anesthesia. This can be done using laparoscopy or using an open technique. The rectum will be temporarily closed and a colostomy bag will be attached to collect the bowel contents through a stoma. Then a few weeks later or once the colon is fully healed, the doctor will close the stoma and remove the sutures in the rectum.
  • Elective Sigmoidectomy. This procedure is recommended for patients who have had two or three episodes of diverticulitis. In this procedure, the affected colon is removed to prevent a recurrence. This is a robotic-assisted surgery and surgeons usually utilize an advanced surgical system to help them perform the procedure. You will need to stay at the hospital for two to four days post-surgery for observation.

Prevention Against Diverticulitis

So how can you possibly avoid diverticulitis? Living a healthy lifestyle is key. You have to take the time to regularly exercise as this can promote normal bowel functions. Just 30 minutes of exercise can help reduce the pressure inside the colon. You also have to eat more fiber and drink plenty of fluids. And if possible, avoid vices like smoking as it can increase the risks of diverticulitis.
