Get Rid Of Dandruff Naturally

What You Need to Know About Dandruff

Most dandruff treatment options are quite simple, such as using a special shampoo that is available without a prescription. In more serious instances, or for problematic or stubborn dandruff, those people who have persistent dandruff that does not go away following traditional dandruff treatment, or that causes abscesses or sores on the scalp, may need to consult a dermatologist.

What Causes Dandruff?

Dandruff is caused by naturally occurring processes within the body. As skin is naturally shed from the scalp, it occasionally becomes noticeable. Sufferers may notice flakes in their hair or on their clothing and may cause the scalp to itch which is a condition known as seborrhea. Dandruff is typically caused by the overproduction of oil or sebum in the sebaceous glands of the scalp. These are the glands that make oil and that work to assist the body in shedding dead skin. When someone has dandruff, their sebaceous glands are overactive, and they tend to shed more skin than the typical person. Dandruff can also be caused by a naturally occurring yeast fungus known as PityrosporumOvale. While this yeast fungus is not uncommon, if an individual has an overabundance of this fungus within the body, dandruff can develop. The unsightly condition can also be caused by psoriasis or excessive dryness.

When to Seek Dandruff Treatment

Dandruff will usually not go away on its own. Dandruff treatments can be simple and effective. You should seek out dandruff treatment when you notice the signs of dandruff. The scalp will usually present with a red or greasy appearance and develop scales that are white or yellow.

Most of us run to our local market and buy some harsh chemical that may indeed give temporary relief, but does little to truly remedy the root cause. So the next time dandruff shows up try using the following natural cures as well as the recommended preventative measures to get at the root of the problem.

  • A great herbal remedy. Berberine, an ingredient in goldenseal, is an antibacterial and anti-fungal and very useful for dandruff. Two teaspoons of the chopped root should be added to a cup of hot water and then you let it steep for 30 minutes. Strain and add 4 drops of tea tree oil.
  • Essential Oils. Rosemary and Lemon essential oils are also very useful as one of your home remedies for dandruff. To us, this remedy just mixes a few drops of rosemary and lemon essential oils into a quarter cup of sesame oil. Massage this mixture into the scalp thoroughly. Leave for 30 minutes and rinse out.
  • A preventative measure. It is still considered debatable whether consuming too much-saturated fat can play a role in dandruff, but many believe that it can. It is highly recommended that you reduce the amount of saturated fats in your diet. Replace these with healthy fats such as those in olive and sesame oils.
  • Fish is another preventative measure. Omega 6 and Omega 3 oils are both important and necessary in the correct amounts. Today most of us get too much omega 6 and too little omega 3 oil. Getting more omega 3 essential oils into your diet is good both for general health and for your fight against dandruff. Take 2 teaspoons of flaxseed oil a day. Add fish, especially cold sea water fish like mackerel and Alaskan tuna, to your menu at least twice a week, 3 times is better.
  • To use this remedy for dandruff, boil 2 teaspoons of crushed seeds in a cup of water. After boiling let it simmer for 10 minutes and then strain. Add a half of a teaspoon of honey and drink. This is a powerful herb so don`t give to children under six and start with a low dose for older children and those over 65. If unsure consult a knowledgeable herbalist or healthcare professional.
